"The Journey Begins" is a really good start to the gunslinger, as it gets you ready and all excited about older Roland but also refreshes your memory a bit with flashbacks. When I heard about Marvel making a comic adaptation of the series, I knew I had to have them all. Gunslingers were the highest authority in All-World, a parallel version of our own Earth. In addition to the eight novels of the series proper that comprise 4,250 pages, many of King's other books relate to the story, introducing concepts and characters that come into play as the series progresses. Both It and Maturin reside in the Macroverse. It's a haunting, bloodspattered story graced by solid artwork, and a lingering sense of tragedy.Quite personally, this is my favorite of all the Dark Tower graphic novels I've read to date. The man in black had also stayed in the town; he brought a dead man stricken by addiction to the opiate-like "devil grass" back to life and left a trap for Roland. :D The cast of the books is diverse with Roland encountering billy-bumblers and townsfolk in equal measure! In those books, Roland and his friends travel to the town of Tull where they meet up with Sheemie and Susan before returning back home to Roland's father. The story is the greatest conflict between good and evil. Fast forward a bit, Jake and Roland meet up, and they travel across a world (Roland's World) trying to kill the man in black and save the tower.
